Plumbing Leads: Buy Them or Own Them

There are two ways to get plumbing leads: buy them from somebody who may have sold the same homeowner to other plumbers, or generate your own and keep them. Here is what each really costs, without the sales pitch in either direction.

Bought, Or Generated: Not the Same Thing

If you’re reading this you’re probably weighing a lead service, or already paying for one and wondering whether it’s worth it. Fair question. We don’t sell leads. We build the marketing that generates them, so we have an obvious interest in what you conclude. Everything below is checkable, and we’ve tried to be straight about where buying leads works.

What a Shared Lead Actually Is

A shared lead is a homeowner’s contact details sold to more than one company. Everyone who bought it calls within minutes. The homeowner filled in one form and now has several plumbers ringing, which makes them a harder sale than they were a few minutes earlier.

That’s the product working as designed, and it’s in the terms. But it explains what most plumbers notice: the close rate is lower than the numbers implied, and the price competition is brutal because the others are quoting the same water heater this afternoon.

Plumbing Has a Wrinkle: Pay-Per-Call

Plumbing is one of the trades where pay-per-call is common. Some websites that look like a local plumber are really call brokers: the number on the page forwards to whichever company is paying that day. The homeowner thinks they called a neighborhood plumber. You paid for a call you didn’t earn and may not get again.

None of that builds anything for you. The homeowner never learns your name, never saves your number, and calls the same broker next time.

Emergency Calls and Planned Jobs Are Sold as One Product

A clogged kitchen drain and a sewer line replacement are not remotely the same thing to your business. One is a short visit. The other books out a crew. Most lead vendors price them the same, or close to it, because from their side both are one form fill or one phone call.

So the arithmetic that looks fine across your water heater leads can be quietly losing money across your drain leads, and the blended number hides it. If you’re buying leads today, split last quarter’s into service calls and planned work and cost them separately. One of the two is often carrying the other.

The number that matters isn’t cost per lead. It’s cost per booked job, and the two can point in opposite directions.

What Are Your Bought Leads Costing?

The starting figures are round placeholders to make the arithmetic easy to follow. They aren’t industry averages or our data. Replace all four with yours, then run it once for drain calls and once for water heaters.

When Buying Leads Is the Right Call

Sometimes it is, and pretending otherwise would be dishonest. If you’re brand new with no website, no reviews and no visibility, bought leads put work on the board next week while everything else is being built. If you’ve opened in a county where nobody knows you, they bridge the gap. If you’ve added a service like tankless installs and want to know whether the demand is there, a month of leads is a cheaper answer than a year of marketing.

What they aren’t is a foundation. The plumbers who struggle are the ones who have been buying for years and would have nothing if the tap were turned off tomorrow.

What Generating Your Own Actually Takes

Honest version: longer than buying, and it doesn’t all work on day one. A website that converts, a Google Business Profile that shows up in your towns, reviews arriving steadily, and advertising you control. The first calls come quickly from ads. The rest build over months.

In exchange, every one of those calls is yours alone. You’re not one of several plumbers calling back, and you’re not quoting against companies who were handed the same job an hour ago. And it accumulates: the visibility you build this year still works next year, and the homeowner who found you saves your number for the next time.

Questions We Get
About This

How much do plumbing leads cost?

It varies a lot by market, service and vendor, and prices move with demand. That’s why we’d rather compare cost per booked job than price per lead. A cheap lead that rarely books can cost more per job than an expensive one that usually does.

Are exclusive leads worth the extra?

Often, because you’re not racing other plumbers to the phone. But “exclusive” is worth checking: ask how the lead was generated and whether the homeowner knows who they’re talking to. Then run the numbers on cost per booked job.

What about Google Local Services Ads?

They can make sense for some plumbing companies and we’ll look at whether they fit your market. They’re one channel, not a plan. We’d want them tracked alongside everything else so you can see what each lead cost and what it turned into.

Do you sell leads?

No. We build and run marketing that generates calls for your company only. Nothing we produce for you is sold to anyone else.
